Fear Kiting

Minimum Level: 26

Where: Sparse populated area or area where there are few roaming mobs in the fear path. I was in the Lake of Ill Omen during these levels and that is where I learned.

Effectiveness: Average. Best when done with another dps class.

Needed songs memorized:  Selo’s Consonant Chain (Snare/Slow) and Angstlich’s Appalling Screech (Fear)

Recommend  additional Songs: Hymn of Restoration (heal) and either Jonthan’s Whistling Warson (self-only haste) or Anthem de Arms (group haste) if other melee dps class is with you.

Mob Types: Any mob that isn’t snare, slow, or fear immune (most mobs are fear kitable).

View:  I typically use the regular first person view I play in when grouped

The idea behind fear kiting is to keep the mob feared, and hence running away, while you melee it to death.  You use the snare/slow song to keep the mob from running away too fast and far.  Your twist here will be snare/slow, fear, haste.  If the mob you are kiting is giving you a large number of resists, you may need to drop haste and just do snare/slow and fear.

You will need to know how the mob will path when feared. If you fear a mob and it runs straight into a camp of 5 other mobs that will agro, you will be in trouble. Learning how mobs path is simply a function of watching and remembering. If you are in an open, outdoor zone, the mobs path may not matter too much.  If you are kiting close to a bandit camp, fort, town, etc, the mob could path directly into the city (and other mobs).  Practice makes perfect.

I prefer to fear kite with a partner.  A rogue makes the best choice for fear kiting.  If the mob is running away, the rogue can use their pigsticker to poke the mob in the back for nice damage. Monks are typically my second choice for fear kiting since they also have very nice melee damage output. If your group is lacking a tank or a healer, consider fear kiting until you find one as there is little need for tanking or healing with this method.

Two words of caution on fear kiting.

1) Most bards have a very low brass skill when they first get level 27 and their fear song. Even though you do not need a brass instrument to sing the fear song, a brass skill check will be made in order to start the song. If you need to raise your brass skill, go to a non-kos area like Plane of Knowledge, Nexus, or Bazaar and start the fear song with a brass instrument equip’ed.  Turn your monitor off and go to bed, watch a movie, etc.  Your skill should max out while you do other things.

2) The fear song is an area effect song.  This means if another mob other than the one you are kiting gets too close while you are singing the fear song, it will get feared and agro onto you.  This is why fear kiting in an area with few roamers is encouraged.
