Xegony Bard

Resists For Dummies

One of the largest problems I faced as a veteran dragon-raid leader was the number of people who would attend the raid with inadequate resists. This short guide is here to provide some basic information on obtaining a decent set of resist gear without having to be filthy rich or part of an uber guild.  While much of the resist gear mentioned does have a cost, it is not prohibitively expensive.

Player Made Resist Gear

Player made resist gear is probably the easiest way to increase resistances.  With the introduction of the Bazaar feature, prices across the board have decreased, making the resist gear even more affordable.  Asking around a little can usually turn up the name of a competent jeweler. Many jewelers will make the jewelry at cost or next to nothing if you provide the materials.

The Materials

There are two parts to any player made jewelry; the metal and the gem. There are five basic types of metals; silver, electrum, gold, platinum, and velium.  The metal will need to be enchanted by an enchanter. The specific level will depend on the metal involved.  The metals range in price from a couple of gold to about 100-120pp per platinum bar and higher for velium.  Just about every city (including Shadowhaven on Luclin and the Plane of Knowledge in PoP) have a place where silver, electrum, gold, and platinum can be bought.  Velium is a little more rare. Check www.eqtraders.com to find specific NPCs and locations.

The gems used will depend on what type of resist you are trying to get.  For Naggy and Ragefire, only Magic and Fire resists are important;  for Vox and Gore, only Magic and Cold resists are important; for Traknon only Magic and Poison resists are important.  You can tailor your resist gear to specific encounters or simply get a general set of resist gear. The general set will usually suffice, but is generally slightly less resistant than a specific set.  Below is a table detailing what resists go with which gems.

As you can see, you can gain a specific resist or use diamonds and blue diamonds to increase all resists.  I used specific resists at first since they were cheap and easy to get. Now I use a set of diamond and blue diamond resist gear mostly.  Diamonds have been averaging about 100-300pp each and blue diamonds have been running 400-800pp each on Xegony.

The Items

Having 20 blue diamond earrings wouldn’t do much good since you only have two ears.  In this section I will highlight what metals make which items for each of the above metals. There are five types of items that can be made:  rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and veils. You can equip one necklace and mask and two each of the rings, earrings, and bracelets.  If multiple instances of the same item occur, then the higher the metal, the higher the bonus.

Hence, the best all purpose player made resist set would include 2 blue diamond rings, earrings, bracelets, 1 blue diamond veil and 1 blue diamond necklace. This set would add 58MR, 76FR, 80CR, 65PR, 65DR and 155 mana.  This would cost 4K-5K though, which can be quite a bit to some of us (myself included). For specific amounts of resists added for each item, see Arusab’s Jewelry Table which can be found at www.xegonybard.com/files.htm

Other Resist Gear

There are a number of other items that can be obtained that will also greatly increase your resists. I only go into detail on the tradeable items here, since this is about convenience and accessibility. The Bazaar would be the ideal spot to check first for those interested in buying these items.  Prices vary from server to server, but I list the prices to the best of my knowledge. The first item is the Crown of the Froglok King. This crown adds an additional 20 to both fire and cold resists.  The latest price I saw on Xegony for these was 300-800pp. It drops in Lower Guk. It is a fairly simple camp for a single group of mid 40s-50s characters.  Several classes could solo this camp if needed. This crown is great for the Naggy/Vox raider as it gives you both resists you will need. The next item is the Cloak of the Icebear.  It adds 20 cold resist. It is a simple camp in Everfrost.  See www.Allakhazam.com for specific information on this camp. The latest price I’ve seen for this item was 150-300pp.

Summoned Resist Gear

A bonus source of resist gear can come from magician summoned resist gear. I call this bonus resist gear since you should never depend on having a magician around to summon it for you (unless you are a magician that is). There are several summoned items that magicians can summon depending on their level and spell selection. Their items can cover the back, shoulder, and range slots. This is the icing on the cake so to speak to top of a specific resist. See the spell listings for magicians at eq.castersrealm.com for specific details.

This guide does not include all the resist gear available.  I listed some of the most common and easy to obtain items only. Using the search function in the Bazaar for specific resists will show more items, many of which I’ve probably never even heard of. For my Naggy/Vox raids I usually ask that people obtain 100 in Magic and either Fire or Cold unbuffed depending on if the raid is on Naggy (fire) or Vox (cold). I do not a full set of blue diamond resist gear yet myself.  I generally have between 130 and 150 in my resists unbuffed during raids needing them.  With buffs this is generally a bit over 200 and bard songs takes the resists up close to the 300 mark.  In places like ToV having 300 in fire, cold, and magic are essential to success of the raid.
